Morocco is a hectic, colourful and mystical land. This easily accessible country can be reached in just a few short hours from Britain and is perhaps one of the most popular African destinations. Located in north Africa, the perfect climate and friendly locals, make Morocco a perfect African destination.
The vibrant cities of Marrakech, Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier are the most commonly visited places throughout Morocco. Their stunning scenery and lively markets are what most attracts the thousands of visitors each year. The open air markets of Morocco offer such treats as woodwork, leather, rugs and pretty jewellery.
The capital city of Rabat has a rich ambiance which you would be hard pushed to find any where else in the world. The unique combination of old and new world of the city make Rabat an interesting place indeed. There are several places of interest in Rabat, but perhaps the most interesting of these is the site of the Tour Hassan, this is where the unfinished minaret of the great mosque begun but was rudely halted by the interruption of an earthquake in 1755.
Casablanca can not be mentioned without a tear in the eye for Rick and Ilsa who, had things been different?? And just like the famous movie Casablanca can be the start of a beautiful friendship. Although unlike the inactive lacklustre city portrayed in the movie, Casablanca is a hive of activity. Being Morocco?s largest and most industrial city, Casablanca is far from quiet. The ancient quarter or locally known as the medina is a great place to visit if you get the chance. The old buildings and parks found here aid in obtaining the classic picture of Casablanca you long for.
Marrakech is possibly the most important cultural centre in Morocco. For the colourful and entertaining markets Morocco are famous for, Marrakech is the place to be. The heart and soul of Marrakech is the Place Djemaa el-Fna. This colossal square found in the aged city has row upon row of sumptuous local food and drink, clothes, art and jewellery. This quirky market must be seen if you get the chance. Not just for the many items for sale, but for the entertainment in the streets. Here you can stand back in amazement at the acrobats as they fly through the air, watch the snake charmers mesmerise both snake and you and the many storey tellers who have tales of old to share. You can spend a whole day at this market and not see everything, the entertainment and activities here make the trip down to your local market look like a teddy bears picnic.
Tangier is another bustling Morocco city. Definitely not for the faint hearted and more suited to the traveller seeking excitement and possibilities. Reputation can make or break a city, and Tangier is home to the notorious hustlers. Although there are many places of interest including the American Legation Museum which can offer a different if somewhat tarnished view of the ancient Tangier.
