Johannesburg is the largest of all the South African cities and is more commonly referred to as Jo?burg. The agreeable climate to be found in Johannesburg makes it an ideal destination for any traveller. The variety of activities, nightlife, culture and markets add to the huge appeal Johannesburg has enjoyed for generations.

Although in recent years Johannesburg has had the unfortunate reputation as being the most dangerous place in South Africa, this is not entirely true. Yes there are some parts of Johannesburg which you should almost certainly avoid, but there are other places which call for no alarm what so ever. And just like any other city you would visit, there are good and bad areas. Just make sure you are safe when travelling and don?t get yourself noticed. Try not to advertise yourself as a tourist by walking about with a bum bag and camera, other wise you might as well have a tattoo on your forehead saying ?mug me?. That being said, there are many beautiful and magical places to visit in Johannesburg and you should not let the unfortunate reputation deter you from exploring the many delights this city has to offer.

Due to the former segregation policy in Johannesburg, there is a separate township called Soweto. This is essentially a black city which has grown in the South west region of Johannesburg due to the white rule at the time. Established in 1944, Soweto is a mixture of vast regions and shack lands. It is best to avoid this area unless you visit on an organised tour. Tours can be arranged, although the hardship and poverty to be witnessed here is hard to take and can leave you feeling quite rightly disgusted at the way these people have been treated.

Johannesburg is also the worlds authority of gold mining and as a result, the city is very affluent. The hotels and restaurants in Johannesburg are sensational and definitely not for the budget traveller. The high rise buildings and office blocks found in the heart of Johannesburg give the city a vibrant and energetic feel. On almost every street corner you have vendors from neighbouring countries selling goods and food for you to savour and if that isn?t enough you can enjoy some retail therapy by shopping at one of the many famous stores.

For a spot of culture there are museums and galleries for you to visit or even the Johannesburg Zoo. Whatever takes your fancy, Johannesburg will have exactly what you are after.

The accommodation in Johannesburg is best suited to those lucky people who are not restricted to a budget. The majority of hotels are large and expensive in the city centre, but are well worth it if you have the money. For those who are restricted to a price limit, there are a small selection of guest houses in the centre where you can stay in a comfortable, clean room at a reasonable price. Make sure all accommodation is in place before you arrive to avoid disappointment.
